Long before silicon, before steel, before industry knew its name - carbon was folding itself into perfect hexagons, deep beneath Sri Lanka. This is the story of what happened next.
The seam was here long before us.
Vein graphite forms only where geology grants permission. A carbon-rich melt rises slowly through fractures in the earth, cools under enormous pressure, and crystallises into structures of near-perfect order. It cannot be farmed. It cannot be grown in a laboratory. It is found, or it is not.
Sri Lanka holds, by an accident of plate tectonics roughly 550 million years ago, the largest known concentration of high-purity vein graphite on Earth. The Ragedara seam - our seam - sits within that geological gift, in the central rolling country near Melsiripura.
When we say our material is 99.99% pure carbon before we touch it, this is what we mean. The work was done by the planet.
From colonial trade to the nuclear age.
Sri Lankan graphite has been mined and traded since the late nineteenth century. Until the end of the Second World War, Ragedara and its neighbouring veins produced the highest-grade graphite traded on global markets - material that found its way into electric arc-lamps, into the lubricants of early industry, and ultimately into the moderator blocks of the first generation of nuclear reactors.
After 1945, the seam fell quiet. Synthetic graphite, easier to standardise and cheaper to scale, captured industrial attention through the second half of the twentieth century. The world moved on. Ragedara waited.
When graphene research intensified through the 2000s - Nobel Prize, 2010 - the limitations of synthetic feedstock became newly visible. Defects. Contamination. Layer disorder. The kind of imperfections that geological time, not laboratory hours, is required to eliminate.
Graphenera was founded in 2012.
We reopened the mine with modern stewardship practices and a single conviction: that the world's purest natural graphite deserved a refining process worthy of its quality.
Sri Lankan tradition gave us the source. Partnerships with German processing laboratories gave us the discipline. Through the 2010s we developed proprietary exfoliation, oxidation and reduction techniques that let us bring graphene products to market without resorting to synthetic feedstock or harsh chemical shortcuts.
By 2024, our material was placing first in independent conductivity benchmarks at the Industrial Technology Institute in Sri Lanka. By 2026, structural characterisation by Bala Materials Lab at Keele University had confirmed predominantly monolayer behaviour across our research-grade samples.
Now in laboratories on six continents.
We export to research and industrial customers in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and Australia, with growing partnerships across Asia and the Middle East. We work directly. There are no intermediaries between our seam and your specification.
Every batch is independently assayed. Every claim on this site is footnoted by a laboratory report we will share on request. Our specifications are not marketing copy - they are evidence.
Two hundred years remain.
At present operating capacity, more than two centuries of working reserves sit in the seam. We do not intend to exhaust them. Our extraction methods are deliberately conservative; our processing footprint runs largely on solar; our community partnerships in Melsiripura are built for longevity rather than headlines.
We are building a company we expect to outlive us. The graphene industry is at the moment where the right partners can shape what comes next. We are looking for them.
